| Modelling of heat transfer in a cooling unit |
Synergetics were engaged to analyze the performance of a railway locomotive diesel engine inter-cooler under expected worst case operating conditions. Of particular concern was the operational performance of the unit while the train was at a station. During this time, only a single fan could operate to satisfy tough noise specifications. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models of the unit, which consisted of charge air and oil radiators and twin fan units, were constructed. Detailed unit performance characteristics were prepared to assist the client in determining the required fan types, and minimize the need for physical prototype testing. |
